Course Description:
This class will provide a supportive space and community for accessing our creativity and building a sustainable writing practice. Through a mixture of lecture, writing exercises, and group work, students will rediscover a sense of play and experimentation. We will also learn the nuts and bolts of establishing a creative practice, which can often feel impossible in the relentless crush of family life.
In the early years of motherhood, many people experience a profound loss of self. Each day is a tidal wave of joy, grief, pain, and loneliness, but the means to express any of it often feels out of reach. This class is for mothers or anyone who connects with the mother archetype; those who mother.
Throughout the class, students will produce writing in many forms, with no pressure to commit to a single style or piece of writing. Kate will provide written feedback on student work each week. Pieces will be shared in a closing celebration with family, friends, and community members.
This course will focus on:
● Building confidence and a sense of openness when approaching creative work
● Learning strategies for generating new ideas
● Approaching the world with a writer’s mind
● Refining writing craft and playing with language
● Defining boundaries and carving space and time for your writing
● Developing habits and structures for sustainable creative practice
About the instructor: Kate Sweeney was born in Athens, Georgia, and has since lived many places, including Los Angeles, New York, and Salt Lake City. She began writing when she was
sixteen. Her father—a novelist and screenwriter—had died five years prior, and in
writing she found a way of bringing his voice back to her ears.
In the past five years, Kate has published two YA novels, Catch the Light and This One’s For You, with a third out next summer through Viking Press. She is also a songwriter and musician in the bands Magic Magic Roses and July. Finally, she is the mother of a young child, who is the source of both profound inspiration and near-constant distraction, exhaustion, and unbelievable joy.
